XO was LTC Charles Zipp. Arty Advisor as Maj Kennedy. Had a great time in Nurnburg and the base EM/NCO club. If anyone remembers me - drop me an email at spyone@cox.net

I was assigned to the 371 AIB in Jan 1955-Dec 1957 when the unit moved to Worms, Germany.

I was first assigned to Delta Company as an infantry man. The Company Commander was Capt Mohler who was a WWII battle field commissioned officer. The XO was a West Point Grad Lt Bringham.

I was sent to the Ordinance Supply NCO school and being the only PFC in the class, shoveled a lot of snow during the breaks. Upon returning to the unit I was assigned to the HHC S4 section as the ordinance supply clerk. I later became the chief clerk and then the Asst Battalion supply Sgt. In the S4 section I worked for CWO Reynolds & BN supply Sgt SFC Briggs.

I extended for 6 months to help the unit move to Worms.

Many a happy memory from Merrill Barracks. I think it's the best place I was ever assigned.

Of note: Seventeen years later I was assigned to the 2nd ACR 1st Sqdn at Bindlach (as a CWO) and the Regimental HQ was at Merrill Barracks.

My Son and I visited Germany in May 2009 and I did a memory lane visit to Nurnberg. Nothing is the same, but my memories are of the good times I had while assigned to Merrill Barracks.

Late 69 to early 71: I was with 182nd LEM. I was in the move from Darby to Merrell, traded places with the 42nd HEM as I recall. Then they moved our billets from one side of Merrell to the other. I played on the company softball team & the German club soccer team made up of guys from the 182nd. Roomed with Gary Conners, Terry Horwath, Tony Barilone, others. Sometimes referred to as Steam or Vapor, tendency to disappear. Played ball & soccer with guest #125, How you doing Hawk.

I was stationed with HHB 3/17FA, Jan-Aug 70. Had a lot of good friends and good times there. Looking to contact any of those there during that time. I was with the Fire Direction Team. We took an old German refrigeration trailer and converted it into an operations van. Spent a lot of time in Graf and on alerts. Looking for old friends, i.e. Ed Fry, Ed Downey, Mark Hedges especially, and any of the other guys and/or their spouses in my section. :-)

I enjoyed the time I had at Merrell. I was stationed with the 116th Ord Co from 8/1977 to 8/1979. We worked in the LCSS vans next to the bowling alley and our shop was under the lanes. I got to see a lot of the country during Reforger 79 on a TDY escorting the HET's picking up broken tanks and bringing them back to Stuttgart.

Was stationed with A btry 3/17FA from Oct76 to Jan82. Was on SSG Sanders gun for the first couple months. Moved to the Ammo section under Sgt Shaw for awhile. Then moved to Special Weapons under Sgt Bobby Finger. Stayed in special weapons, becomiing squad ldr until the fall of 81 when I became Bn special weapons NCO/ S-2 clerk. I was with A btry in Graf when a bad fuze caused a premature detenation and blew the muzzle brake and 4' of the barrel off. Remember Range Control calling on the net that only 5 rounds impacted and the commander (I think it was Cpt McKenty) calling back and asking if Range Control had seen the muzzle brake impact. The best times I remember are at Nicko's and the fests. Though the pizzas from across the street really hit the spot.

Cleveland Lewis (Unk ):
Hey Yates - this is Cleveland form A-btry commo section. I remember all the section chiefs you mentioned. How about Top Faulk? My commo shop was next to your SW shop downstairs. Some of the other guys that I remember are Sedevy, Grimm, Wyatt and Sgt. Jasper. Do you remember the driving course at Hienberg and the good times at the Dutsendike? It's good to see someone on the site from the unit.

I was the Maint. Welder and Wheel Vehicle Mechanic in the Motor Pool from Dec 1964 to January 1966 stationed at Merrell Barracks. I was in the 2nd / 34th Howitzer Battalion. I just found this site today and am enjoying looking at the pictures. In the pictures posted by Lawrence Miles I saw 3 pictures of myself. In one photo I was sitting on top of a 105 Howitzer. The other 2 photos I was working on one. I was glad to be able to sit with my wife and talk to her about the different places and sites I saw when in Germany. Will look forward to watching the message board and looking at the pictures. I have a few pictures and will try to get them posted.

My ( now ) Ex Husband was in Merrell Barraks from 84-88. His Name was Sgt Oren Smith( ROMEO)By the time we left we our 2nd. child on the way. We left to Fort Campbell Kentucky. I remember his Unit A 3/5 he use to work in the Motor Pool. I dont know a lot because he kept me away from merrell barraks. I am German and he took me to the USA to leave me with 3 Children . Well, i just wanted to tell you Guy's. I hate to see what the Germans did to the Barraks. Even if he never wanted me around the Soldiers, until we was serious i had my share . I loved the time and wish i could turn time back. God bless the USA

Hello, I live right across the street from the former Merrell Barracks. When I moved here (in 1987) the Americans were still here. I could watch them doing PT in the mornings.
I don't know if anyone knows but they teared down a big part of the old buildings. They build a huge Furniture Store and a Parking Garage.
If anyone wants to know more, I can also send pictures.

Great site, too many hazy memories. Was at Merrell 78/79, C battery 3/17Th FA,I was a trouble maker so anyone I fought with or offended I truly apologize.Sorry to see Merrel close(not as sorry as the com-rads at the pizza joint and Shell/Bier station).Anyone remember the plank over the fence behind the Shell? That was mine and for you guys who were restricted and had no other way to get bier, you are very welcome.I would love to hear from any old salty dogs from the best days of my wild and misspent youth even if you don't remember me.(I was the guy who fought with polizi AND MPs And actually came out of it remarkably unscathed! Oh, and 2Nd Looie Anderson, If you are still out there somewhere, you still owe me for the camera. Goosgott!

I was in the 53rd ordnance company at Merrell Barracks from July 1962 to October 1964. Billy Davis jr. of the 5th Dimension fame was there at that time and sang at the EM clubs. We hung out at Siemans Gardens and all of the GI hangouts downtown. Hillbilly, Regolettos, 21, The American Hotel. We always went to the Volksfest and played baseball right below the big stadium at soliders field at the Dusendike park. :-)

Great memories of the Barracks! Was there in 68-69, transfered from 66th HEM in Kitzingen. Was assigned to the supply room in the basement with a usually missing LT. Spent most of my time in the day room with the fusball table over looking the parade grounds or listening to Petula. Shared a room with "Smitty" and he loved everything Petula. GREAT, GREAT memories.....

An old buddy from the 359th ASA tipped me off to this web site. Served in the 2nd ACR from Feb 81 - Feb 84 in the 359th ASA. My ex-father-in-law was Terrible Terry Trobough, Regimental Command Sergeant Major, for those that remember him. He is still kicking outside of Ft. Riley, KS and doing really well. Miss the good times we had back then and the good people.

Brian Walker:
I remember you. I was with the 359th ASA and 502d MI Co. from 81-92. I worked in the C&E Maint. Shop.
